Family!!!! Lima, Peru

We were really excited to visit Peru, especially to see our cousins Maddy and Reese and our Aunty Nic and Uncle Rus.  They live in Lima which is the capital city of Peru.  Aunty Nic took her 18 year old cat Rex with her to Peru and it was so nice to see him again, he is really happy living there and will probably live for another 18 years! Rex has a new friend called Bindi.  Bindi is a bearded dragon, she is just over a year old and she is really sweet and friendly.  Bindi eats lettuce, grated carrots and blueberries but her favorite food is crickets.  Reese got Bindi for his birthday last year when they first moved to Peru.  Bindi now also has a new friend - Pandora the hamster, she is Maddy's new pet.  Pandora is the name of the Goddess of Mischief, which is a good name because hamsters are mischievous.  Pandora is so cute, fluffy and chubby.
We had a great time with Aunty Nic, Uncle Rus, Maddy and Reese.  We got to see and explore and try so many different things.  Luckily they all can speak quite a bit of Spanish which helped us a lot and they taught us a little bit too which made things so much easier.  We went to some Peruvian restuarants and tried some different and exciting dishes like guinea pig, anticuchos (marinated ox heart), alpaca, ceviche (fish marinated in lime juice) and picarones (spiced donuts made with local squash and sweet potato).  Mario, the families friend and driver bought us some delicious chicharron which is braised pork fried in its own fat, fried sweet potato red onion and lime salsa in a bun, it was deliciosa - gracias Mario!!!  We also tried chicha which is a Peruvian traditional corn drink made with purple corn boiled with pineapple (pina) juice, cinnamon and sugar, served cold.  They also had chicha icy poles which were fabulous.
In Peru there are many dogs that roam the streets.  They usually hang out together in small packs and can be a little cheeky.  We saw heaps of dogs eating out of garbage bags on the streets, walking along the beach, playing with each other and sleeping in the shade.  One of funniest looking dogs we've ever seen is the Peruvian Hairless Dog which is a native Peruvian dog that dates back to the Pre-Incan cultures.  We  saw heaps of these funny looking dogs, they have no fur except for a mohawk looking stripe of hair on their heads and sometimes a little hair on the end of their tails.  Aunty Nic said that you have to rub sunscreen on their skin to stop them from getting sun burnt and you also have to moisturise them at least once a week to help keep their skin nice.
We all really enjoyed staying with Aunty Nic, Uncle Rus, Maddy and Reese, it was so nice to see them all again because we miss them a lot and they are so good to us and we all have a lot of fun together. It was great spending time with them and experiencing some of the many different things that Peru has to offer.  We hope they move to Hawaii  next so we can come and stay with them again..........   Gracias por recibirnos, te amamos gringos!!! xx  Drew and Hannah
