Chicama and Trujillo

We went to Chicama with Uncle Rus, Aunty Nic, Maddy and Reese to see the longest left hand wave in the world, it goes for over a kilometre. Dad said that while we were there it was unfortunately in-between swells, so the waves weren't big but we had a great time playing around in the small fun waves.  We kept stepping on flounders, crabs and other crustaceans in the water when we were surfing, it didn't feel very nice.  Aunty Nic stepped on a stingray and got caught in some crab pots and let out a squeal, but she was brave because she was surfing out the back.  The sand at the beach was creamy brown with flecks of fools gold through it, some parts were dark brown almost black.

We had lots of walks along the beach, swam in the pool, went in the spa, mucked around, ate great food and relaxed.  We went to a little shop and found small packets of chewing gum called "Boogie", we thought the name was really funny and bought lots of packs to take home.
Chicama is quite a small fishing village that is known for its surf.  Ancient Peruvians made surf boards out of totora reeds called "caballitos de tora" (little reed horses) that they used to ride the waves in a similar way to how we surf today.  Caballitos de tora were also used like a kayak for fishing and recreation.
We saw people sitting down on these reed boards and surfing the waves in Trujillo when we went there for the day.  In Trujillo we walked along the beach and had a look at the market stalls.  It was quite busy because Trujillo is a large town and lots of Peruvains and tourists come here to holiday at the beach.  We had traditional Peruvian donuts called picarones cooked by a woman and her daughter in a stall on the side of a road.  They had a sweet fruit sauce on them and they tasted like a light but really sweet donut.  It was really sticky and messy but delicioco!

Chicama was an absolutely beautiful place, with the ocean, the waves and the sand.  It was a nice holiday just to relax and catch up with everyone.  The sunsets over the ocean were amazing.  Hannah
